Workshop: IAI Methodology

“Imagination as Infrastructure”

Imagination as Infrastructure

Purpose:

The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate that successful initiatives begin with ideation, the ability to imagine what is possible before moving into planning and execution. The IAI framework recognizes that meaningful ideation happens when people feel connected, heard, and valued. When participants have the freedom to share their perspectives and know their voices matter, they are more willing to take creative risks, imagine new possibilities, and contribute to the development of meaningful ideas.

The Voice Equity Lab creates those conditions through connection, storytelling, and practices that promote voice equity, creating an environment where people feel comfortable dreaming, exploring, and ideating together. This methodology is grounded in extensive academic and corporate research, as well as data supporting the relationship between imagination, psychological safety, participation, and effective innovation. The workshop is not speculative; it is informed by research and designed to translate that knowledge into a practical experience that helps teams and organizations create the conditions for deeper, more inclusive, and more imaginative thinking.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

The primary offering is a half- or full-day intensive, with the option to expand into a multi-session engagement or use the experience as an entry-point keynote that leads into consulting.

Participants will learn the IAI© methodology what it is, why it works, and how it can be applied to organizational culture and strategy. We begin with the premise that imagination is infrastructure: the load-bearing capacity of any culture. The methodology is grounded in academic and corporate research, as well as high-stakes facilitation experience.

At the heart of the experience is an actual Voice Equity Lab©. Rather than simply explaining the methodology, I will facilitate participants through the process itself a structured experience designed to surface voices, build trust, strengthen community, and create the connections necessary for meaningful cultural change. Participants experience the methodology firsthand, both individually and as a team.

I will then share LALOVAVI as a case study in IAI©, demonstrating how imaginative infrastructure can translate into both artistic success and meaningful community impact. The case study includes a sold-out, critically acclaimed new opera; a prequel comic that engaged more than 2,000 students; partnerships with local nonprofits that created entrepreneurial opportunities for community artists; nearly 40% first-time opera-goers; and international media coverage. From there, we turn the methodology toward the participants' own organizations, applying the same principles to their cultural reach and strategy.

Participants will learn how to assess their cultural reach by honestly mapping where their organization currently connects—and where gaps exist. Through storytelling and facilitated reflection, they will explore the often-untapped knowledge already held within their own people and communities.

Finally, the workshop introduces a strategy for building meaningful connections: identifying the communities where culturally relevant art, knowledge, and expertise are already being created, then developing authentic, reciprocal, and non-extractive relationships with those communities. The goal is to move beyond simply reaching new audiences and toward building the relationships and cultural infrastructure that make lasting connection possible.
